Race in America

This is off topic somewhat, but I am infuriated by this story today...

For years, I have taken the position that no race of people are alike. The notion that there is a black community is as preposterous as saying there is a white community. Now along comes a study that has "found" that (wait for it...) black people are not all alike.

Now, I know that the notion that all black people are not alike may come as a surprise to some, but for most, it shouldn't be all that shocking. Yes, there are black people who occupy the lower echelons of society, just as there are white people who occupy that same space. But the idea that a company spent money to find out that black people come with different educational levels, socio-economic statuses, etc., is an abomination.

So, this kinda ties back in with the premise of this blog -- the idea of media gatekeepers. Largely, we can lay the blame of creating monolithic stereotypes at the feet of the media. Where else have we had the stereotype that all Asian people are good at math or that all black people are good dancers? The media have got to get better at showing different aspects of all cultures so that we don't have these alleged groundbreaking studies being done.
